Irish people were not considered white because people thought Irish and Blacks were the same and the Irish were slave substitutes.
Background
In the 1800s, Irish people lived in poverty and most land in Ireland was owned by English landlords. Population decreased from 8.1 million in 1841 to 4.7 million in 1891. Thousands of Irish died in the “coffin” because of starvation or disease and were thrown overboard. Irish immigrants usually had the lowest paying and most dangerous jobs.

MANY PEOPLE MIGHT SAY THAT IRISH PEOPLE WERE CONSIDERED WHITE BECAUSE IN NEW YORK CITY, IRISH WOMEN WERE CONSIDER “WHITE SLAVES.” BUT THEIR WRONG BECAUSE AFRICAN AMERICAN WERE MORE IMPORTANT THAT IRISH PEOPLE. NOBODY REALLY CARED ABOUT THE IRISH ONLY THE AFRICAN AMERICANS "ONE SOUTHERNER EXPLAINS THE USE OF IRISH LABOR ON THE GROUNDS THAT:"N-----S ARE WORTH TOO MUCH TO BE RISKED HERE; IF THE PADDIES (IRISH) ARE KNOCKED OVERBOARD ...NOBODY LOSES ANYTHING. Irish Immigration is significant because it affected many people in the U.S and learning about this helps us learn not to do it again or how to prevent it.
